Refrigerant is handled, and it is not a surcharge

Air conditioners contain refrigerant, and refrigerant has to be recovered by someone qualified before the metal is processed. That is a genuine regulatory requirement and it is the reason cooling equipment is excluded from a lot of ordinary disposal routes.

On our side it is simply part of the job. $115 for an outdoor condenser is the whole number. There is no refrigerant fee, no EPA handling charge and no freon line added on arrival. If a quote for an AC unit looks unusually low and then grows at the door, this is usually where it grows.

The same logic covers refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers, which are the other sealed-system appliances on the list.

Why this comes up so much in this valley

Nowhere else runs cooling equipment as hard. A valley summer means months of continuous operation against outdoor temperatures well above what most equipment is specified for, and the failures cluster in exactly the weeks when a failure is least tolerable.

The specific patterns we see:

• Window and portable units as stopgaps. When central AC fails in July, households buy a window or portable unit to make one room liveable until the repair happens. Then the repair happens and the stopgap goes into the garage, where it sits for years. A large window unit at $109 is one of the most common single items we pull out of valley garages.
• Casitas and converted garages. Detached casitas and garage conversions frequently run on a window or portable unit rather than being tied into the main system, and those units get used hard.
• Old condensers after a system replacement. An HVAC contractor replacing a system will normally take the old outdoor unit. If they did not, or if it was a partial job, the old condenser sits on its pad beside the house.
• Rental turnover. Tenants in this high-churn market buy portable units and leave them behind constantly.

Before we arrive

• Unplug it and let it drain. Portable units and window units hold condensate. Tip them out over a drain, not onto the rock landscaping or a tile floor.
• Get it out of the window safely. A large window unit coming out of a second-floor window is the one genuinely dangerous part of this job. If it is heavy or awkward, leave it in place and tell us at booking rather than doing it alone.
• Outdoor condensers need a proper disconnect. There is a service disconnect box beside the unit and it should be dealt with by an electrician or HVAC technician. We do not cut live feeds, and line-set disconnection is a trade job.
• Clear the path. Condensers sit on a pad in a side yard behind a block-wall gate, and the gate is usually narrow with the pad right behind it. Measure it and tell us.

Worked example: a Henderson garage and side yard

After a full system replacement, a household clears out the accumulated cooling equipment: an old outdoor condenser left on the pad, two large window units and a portable unit from the casita.

$115 + $109 + $109 + $85 = $418.

One visit, quoted before the truck rolls. The condenser disconnected in advance by the HVAC contractor, the window units already out and on the garage floor.

Other routes worth checking

Scrap yards. AC equipment is mostly copper, aluminum and steel, so scrap operations will generally take it and it is one of the better-value scrap categories. Call about their policy on sealed units with refrigerant still in them, because it varies by yard. Worth it if you own a truck and the unit is already outside.

Your HVAC contractor. If you are replacing a system, removal of the old equipment is usually part of the job. Confirm it is on the quote rather than assuming, and confirm whether it covers the air handler as well as the condenser.

Municipal bulk collection. Check your address's rules first, because refrigerant-containing appliances are frequently excluded from ordinary bulk pickup. Even where accepted, the set-out window and your HOA's rules both apply, and a condenser is not something one person carries to a curb.

Utility efficiency programs. Some providers run collection for working but inefficient units. Check your electricity provider's current efficiency page. A dead unit will not qualify.

Timing

Do this in the shoulder season if you have the choice. Between October and April the equipment is off, the side yard is workable, and you are not scheduling around the exact weeks when everyone in the valley is dealing with cooling problems at once.

If it is July and a unit has just died, we can still come, often same day and with no surcharge. Just take the early slot, because a side yard between block walls in the afternoon is the hottest working environment in the metro.

What we cannot take

Loose refrigerant cylinders, which are pressurised and need a proper trade route. Also the usual household hazardous waste list: solvents, oils, pesticides and pool chemistry. The units themselves, with their sealed systems intact, we handle.
