How to get rid of a refrigerator in Las Vegas

The short answer

Disposal is included and so is refrigerant handling. The kitchen fridge plus the dead one in the garage: $164 + $115 = $279. A standard fridge and a chest freezer: $164 + $146 = $310.

The Las Vegas garage fridge

There is a second refrigerator in the garage of an enormous share of valley homes. It makes sense: three-car garages are the standard build here, there are no basements to use instead, and a drinks fridge in the garage is genuinely useful in a place where it is over 100 degrees for months.

It also means these appliances die constantly. A refrigerator's compressor and condenser coil are designed to reject heat into the surrounding air. In an uninsulated valley garage at 120 degrees there is nowhere for that heat to go, so the unit runs continuously, works far outside its design envelope, and fails years earlier than the same model would in a kitchen.

The result is a specific local job: a dead fridge at the back of the third bay, behind a decade of storage, that stopped working in July and got noticed in September. That is one of the most common single calls we take in this market.

Refrigerant is handled, and it is not a surcharge

Refrigerators contain refrigerant that must be recovered by someone qualified before the shell is processed. It is a real regulatory requirement, and it is why some disposal routes refuse cooling appliances outright while happily taking a dresser.

On our side that work is simply part of the job. $164 for a standard fridge is the whole number. There is no refrigerant fee, no freon charge and no EPA handling line added on the day. If a quote for a fridge starts low and grows at the door, this is the usual reason.

Before the crew arrives

• Empty it. Especially a garage unit that has been off and hot for weeks. Deal with the contents before the appointment and open it outdoors, not in the kitchen.
• Disconnect the water line if there is an ice maker or dispenser. Shut the valve first and have a towel ready.
• Unplug it, and for anything hard-wired, get a proper disconnect done.
• Defrost a freezer and let it drain, or it empties onto the floor on the way out.
• Clear the path. A garage fridge is normally behind storage, and the crew needs a route to the door.

You do not need to remove the doors. That is a requirement some curbside programs impose for child-safety reasons; on a booked pickup the unit goes straight onto the truck.

The other routes, honestly

Retailer haul-away. The cheapest option when you are buying a replacement, and it is a delivery-day service only. Arrange it when you order so it is on the paperwork, expect it to be one-for-one, and have the old unit disconnected and accessible. It will not cover the second fridge in the garage, and once delivery day passes the offer is gone.

Utility efficiency programs. Some electricity providers run collection for working but inefficient second refrigerators and freezers, sometimes free and sometimes with an incentive. Check your provider's current efficiency page. The near-universal condition is that the unit must be working, which rules out the dead garage fridge.

Municipal bulk collection. Check your address's rules on your city's or the county's page, because refrigerant-containing appliances are frequently excluded from ordinary bulk pickup. Even where accepted, you have to move a 250-pound appliance to the curb yourself, within the set-out window, and within whatever narrower window your HOA imposes.

Scrap yards. Legitimate if you own a truck and can load it. Call about their policy on sealed units first, and do not rent a vehicle to scrap one fridge.

Getting it out of the house

A standard refrigerator is around 250 to 300 pounds and a French door unit is heavier. The valley-specific pinch points:

• The third garage bay. Wide door, flat concrete, usually the easiest carry there is once the path is clear.
• Kitchen to garage. Straightforward in a single-story home, which most of this valley is. In a two-story, the fridge is on the ground floor anyway.
• Casitas and back yards. A block-wall side gate is often 32 to 36 inches with an AC pad right behind it, which is tight for a side-by-side. Measure it and tell us.
• Apartments. Garden-style complexes off Tropicana, Flamingo and Eastern mean exterior stairs and a breezeway. No stair charge either way.

Worked example: a Centennial Hills clear-out

A household replacing the kitchen fridge and finally dealing with the garage: a new kitchen unit going in, so the old standard fridge comes out, plus the dead mini fridge in the third bay and a chest freezer that has not been opened in two years.

$164 + $115 + $146 = $425.

One visit. Everything emptied in advance, water line disconnected, path cleared through the garage. Priced before the truck rolls.

Timing

Book a morning slot between June and September. A garage appliance carry is the hottest work in this business and an 8am appointment is a different experience from a 2pm one. There is no price difference and no same-day surcharge.
