How to pick a junk hauler in Las Vegas

The short answer

Ask for a written price before anyone is dispatched. Almost every bad outcome in this trade traces back to that one thing not happening, because everything else, the pressure, the surprise total, the argument in the driveway, only becomes possible once you are committed without a number.

The rest of this is the detail: what the red flags look like, what to ask, and what a straight answer sounds like.

Red flag 1: a deposit before any work

A deposit taken up front, particularly by transfer or an app, before a crew has been to your address. A real operator prices the job, books a slot and charges when the work is done or takes a normal card payment through a proper booking flow.

The variant to watch for in this market: a deposit taken to "hold" a last-minute slot at the end of the month, when leases across the valley are ending and everyone is desperate for a truck. Urgency is exactly when people skip their own rules.

Red flag 2: "we'll price it when we get there"

Some legitimate national operators do estimate on site, and their crews are professional. The version to be wary of is different: no indication of cost at all, no range, no per-item rates, and a refusal to discuss numbers until a truck is parked in your driveway.

That is a negotiation you will be having under pressure, with two people already on the clock, possibly with your items already loaded. In a valley full of month-end deadlines and walk-throughs on the 1st, that pressure is real leverage and it is not on your side.

Red flag 3: nothing in writing

No confirmation email, no text with a total, no itemized list. Just a phone call and a promise of a morning.

Without writing you have no record of the price, no record of the appointment window, and nothing to show a property manager, a landlord or an HOA compliance department. The last of those matters here specifically: if you are under a violation notice in Summerlin, Green Valley or one of the Henderson master plans, a dated booking confirmation is the thing that holds escalation.

Red flag 4: cash only

Cash only means no receipt trail, no chargeback route, and usually no insurance either. If the job goes wrong, damage to a stucco wall or a tile floor, or a load that turns up somewhere it should not have, you have nothing.

It also tends to travel with the other flags. Cash-only and no-written-quote are usually the same operator.

Six questions to ask any hauler here

• What is the total for my list, in writing, before you come out? Everything else is secondary to this.
• Is disposal included or billed afterwards? A pass-through gate fee added later is how a low quote becomes a normal one.
• Do you carry from inside, or is this curbside only? Critical in this valley, because most master plans will not let you stage items outside anyway.
• Is there a stair charge or a long-carry charge? Relevant for upstairs bedrooms in the two-story tract housing and for the back of a three-car garage.
• Can you provide a certificate of insurance? Strip-adjacent high-rises and many managed complexes require one on file.
• Where does the load go? A real answer names transfer station, recycling and donation routes.

Las Vegas-specific things to confirm

Three that do not come up in other cities and will cost you a slot if they are missed.

• Gate access. Can they work with a guard-gated entrance, and do they need to be on your visitor list? Anthem Country Club, The Ridges, Lake Las Vegas and several Summerlin villages all control access.
• HOA staging. Will anything be left on the driveway at any point? In most valley master plans the answer needs to be no.
• Heat and timing. Between June and September, can you get an early slot for a garage or back-yard job? Anyone experienced in this market will offer one without being asked.

What a straight answer looks like

Checking an operator out

Two minutes of due diligence:

• Look for a real business presence with a service area that includes your part of the valley. "Las Vegas" in a listing is not the same as covering Henderson or North Las Vegas.
• Read the reviews that mention price changing on arrival. That is the specific failure to look for, more than the star average.
• Ask whether the person quoting you is the person coming. Some operators broker the job onwards, which is fine if disclosed and a problem if not.
• Check they will take your specific item. Refrigerant appliances, electronics and construction debris get declined by a lot of small operators.

The one-line version

Get the total in writing before the truck leaves. An operator who will do that has already passed most of the test, and one who will not has answered every other question you were going to ask.
